President Donald Trump and Vice President Vance looked visibly irritated during a political sermon at the National Cathedral during the Inaugural Prayer Service. The sermon, delivered by a bishop, leaned heavily into liberal issues, surprising the leaders.
Trump, Vance, and their families attended the service as part of the tradition for newly sworn-in leaders. However, the bishop’s words soon shifted focus to controversial topics.
“There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and independent families. Some fear for their lives,” the bishop said. She then moved on to discuss immigration.
“And the people who pick our crops, clean our office buildings, labor in poultry farms and meat packing plants, who wash the dishes after we eat at restaurants and work the night shifts at hospitals, they may not be citizens, or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals,” she added.
Trump and Vance exchanged glances and shook their heads after the remarks. Their expressions left little doubt about their disapproval.
The sermon occurred just one day after Trump was sworn in as the 47th president. His administration wasted no time in making bold moves.
On his first day, Trump signed executive orders addressing key priorities. He declared a national emergency at the border and affirmed a controversial stance on gender, stating there are only two: male and female.
The service, meant to unite, instead highlighted the stark divisions between the leaders and the bishop’s political tone.
