HomeNews WireJudicial Watch Claims Iowa Voter Registration Numbers Trigger Red Flags, Iowa Secretary of State Disputes It Editor February 5, 2020 ***CORRECTION*** Claims in this article have since been deemed inaccurate and more context has been added to make the situation more clear for the reader. Initially, there were claims of voter fraud in the article. The initial article by Judicial Watch had no claim of voter fraud. To be more clear, Judicial Watch claimed that “eight Iowa counties have more voter registrations than their eligible voting-age population.” Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate has since disputed this as "false claims" and provided the necessary information to dispute the initial report. ****CORRECTION*** According to government watchdog group Judicial Watch, Iowa was discovered to have a surplus of registered voters just ahead of the caucus. Judicial Watch found eight counties in Iowa that have more voter registrations than they should adding up to roughly 18,600 names. Along with that, there is one county in Iowa that has an unusually high percentage of registered voters compared to the total of eligible voters at 95.9%. Judicial Watch announced that eight Iowa counties have more voter registrations than their eligible voting-age population. According to Judicial Watch’s analysis of data released by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) in 2019 and the most recent U.S. Census Bureau’s five-year American Community Survey, eight Iowa counties are on the list of 378 counties nationwide that have more voter registrations than citizens living there who are old enough to vote, i.e., counties where registration rates exceed 100%. These 378 counties combined had about 2.5 million registrations over the 100%-registered mark. In Iowa, there are at least 18,658 “extra names” on the voting rolls in the eight counties at issue. This report from Judicial Watch has since been contested by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate. He labeled them as "false claims" that "erode voter confidence in elections." Per sos.iowa.gov: “It’s unfortunate this organization continues to put out inaccurate data regarding voter registration, and it’s especially disconcerting they chose the day of the Iowa Caucus to do this,” Secretary Pate said. “My office has told this organization, and others who have made similar claims, that their data regarding Iowa is deeply flawed and their false claims erode voter confidence in elections. They should stop this misinformation campaign immediately and quit trying to disenfranchise Iowa voters.” In the report released by Pate, it shows that voter registration statistics are readily available and are updated monthly. When compared to these numbers, it shows the numbers released by Judicial Watch were false.
