Governors Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer won’t be Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate if she replaces President Joe Biden.
Reports say Biden, isolating with COVID, might soon drop out of the race.
Biden’s debate performance last month increased concerns about his age and ability to beat Trump, who recently survived an assassination attempt.
Over two dozen congressional Democrats are urging Biden to step aside. Biden insists he won’t drop out and that it’s his decision.
Harris is seen as the likely candidate to replace Biden. She has defended Biden loyally since the debate.
With Biden possibly leaving, Democrats are discussing Harris’ potential running mates.
The shortlist includes Sen. Mark Kelly, Gov. Andy Beshear, and Gov. Roy Cooper, says The Hill.
But Newsom and Whitmer have told party leaders they aren’t interested in being Harris’ VP.
The Biden campaign denies he’ll drop out.
“The President is his party’s nominee, having won 14 million votes,” a spokesperson told The Washington Post. “He’s running for reelection, and that won’t change.”
In an interview Wednesday, Biden said he’d consider ending his campaign if a doctor found a serious medical condition.
