Golfer Phil Mickelson blasted California Governor Gavin Newsom on social media after Newsom announced a lawsuit against President Donald Trump over electric vehicle funding.
Newsom said the lawsuit aims to force the federal government to release billions in EV infrastructure funds allegedly withheld by the Trump administration. “This is yet another Trump gift to China – ceding American innovation and killing thousands of jobs. We are not letting up,” Newsom posted.
Mickelson responded sarcastically, mocking the governor by referencing California’s troubled high-speed rail project: “Stay after it governor. Show him what a great high speed railway system we have and I’m sure he’ll change his mind.”
The California high-speed rail, originally proposed in 2008 with a $30 billion price tag, has ballooned to an estimated $130 billion. It’s long been a target of Trump’s criticism. Speaking earlier this week, the president called the project “the worst cost overrun thing I’ve ever seen,” saying it would damage any future presidential ambitions Newsom might have.
“A little train going from San Francisco to Los Angeles that’s being run by Gavin Newscum… hundreds of billions for a stupid project that should’ve never been built,” Trump said.
Mickelson, 54, doubled down on his criticism when Newsom launched a new website, “californiafacts.com,” intended to counter misinformation about the state. The LIV golfer dismissed the effort as more spin, continuing his public feud with the Democratic governor.
