The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded a massive voluntary recall of nearly 650,000 pounds of frozen tater tots produced by McCain Foods USA. The agency announced the update on February 10, warning that the popular potato products may contain small, clear bits of hard plastic. These fragments pose a significant choking hazard and could cause injuries to the mouth and throat.
The latest action affects more than 21,600 cases across 28 states, ranging from Pennsylvania and Ohio to California and Hawaii. The recall primarily impacts food service accounts, meaning the products were distributed to restaurants, schools, and other institutions rather than retail grocery stores. The FDA has classified this as a Class II recall, indicating that while serious harm is unlikely, the product could cause temporary or medically reversible health issues.
Affected products include 21,557 30-pound cases of Ore-Ida Tater Tots and 67 cases of Sonic Tots. The Ore-Ida cases carry the item number OIF00215A and batch codes 1005475084, 1005476076, 1005477012, and 1005498350. The Sonic Tots are identified by item number SON00543 and batch code 1005486334.
This February announcement marks an expansion of an earlier recall initiated in late 2025. That initial wave included approximately 21,200 cases of Ore-Ida Tater Tots and 17,600 cases of Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrels. No injuries or illnesses have been confirmed in connection with any of the affected batches to date.
McCain Foods, based in Burley, Idaho, has urged all food service vendors and institutions to stop using the product immediately. Managers are advised to check their inventory for matching batch codes and dispose of the contaminated food or contact their supplier for a refund. Despite the staggering scale of the recall, experts note that most home freezers remain safe since these specific bulk cases were not sold directly to consumers.
