The Miami Dolphins officially ushered in a new era on Thursday morning. Owner Stephen Ross relieved head coach Mike McDaniel of his duties following a disappointing 7–10 season.
The move marks a total reset for the franchise. The Dolphins have now fired both their head coach and their longtime general manager, Chris Grier, within the last three months.
The firing sent shockwaves through South Florida. It also prompted a lighthearted response from the nation’s top diplomat.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio took to social media to address “online rumors” regarding the vacancy. Rubio is a lifelong Dolphins fan and frequent commentator on the team.
“I will not be a candidate for the currently vacant HC and GM positions with the Miami Dolphins,” Rubio posted on X. He stated that his focus must remain on global events and the “precious archives” of the United States.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross announced the news in a formal statement. He cited a need for “comprehensive change” after the team missed the playoffs for a second straight year.
Ross praised McDaniel as an “incredibly creative football mind.” However, he insisted the organization needs a new direction to achieve its long-term goals.
McDaniel’s final season in Miami was a tumultuous one. The team struggled with a 1–6 start and significant offensive stagnation.
The season was further highlighted by the struggles of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He was eventually benched during the final three games of the season.
The Dolphins are now entering the 2026 offseason with a high-pressure vacancy. They are jumping into a market already crowded with eight other coaching openings.
Names like John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski are already surfacing as top contenders. Both coaches were recently let go by their respective teams and offer veteran experience.
Owner Stephen Ross is reportedly looking for a “stabilizer” to lead the team. He wants a leader who can end the franchise’s 25-year playoff win drought.
The Dolphins’ search for a new head coach will begin immediately. The team hopes to have a new leader in place before the upcoming NFL scouting combine.
