The Teamsters announced Wednesday that they won’t endorse a presidential candidate. This comes despite showing internal polls that favor Trump.
Their polling revealed that 59.6% of members supported Trump over Harris, who had 34%. In a phone survey, Trump had 58%, while Harris had 31%.
Trump’s popularity surged after Harris replaced Biden. Earlier data showed Biden led Trump among union members by 44.3% to 36.3%.
The union explained their decision, saying no candidate had universal support. They noted there wasn’t a clear majority backing either Harris or Trump.
This marks a shift in tradition. The Teamsters have endorsed Democrats for president since 1992. The last Republican they endorsed was in 1988.
They’re now the only major union not backing Harris, while she faces Trump for the presidency.
Trump’s campaign seized the moment, issuing a statement titled, “Union Workers Support President Donald Trump.”
His press secretary said the Teamsters made their voice heard, wanting Trump back in the White House. She praised them as the backbone of America.
Fox News reached out to Harris for comment, but no response was received.
Teamsters president O’Brien also made history. In July, he became the first Teamsters leader to speak at a Republican National Convention. However, his appearance caused controversy within the union. Democrats didn’t invite him to their convention in Chicago last month.
