Democrats Say There is ‘One Choice’ to Replace Biden With Time Running Out

Kamala Harris is seen as the “only choice” to replace Joe Biden as the Democrats’ presidential nominee. Senior party figures told The Telegraph there’s little time until the election.

The vice-president is gaining support among many elected officials. They believe the 81-year-old president’s position is untenable.

But how she would take the top spot, if Biden steps down, is still debated.

Harris’s allies are reportedly working on a plan. They aim to secure her as the candidate-in-waiting.

However, Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker, reportedly favors an open convention. This would allow alternatives like Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer and California’s Gavin Newsom to pitch for the nomination.

Pelosi believes a “mini-primary” could strengthen Harris. It would also prevent the impression that the nomination was handed to her by party leaders.

If Biden quits, he could ask his delegates to endorse Harris. With influential party figures backing her, a coronation could easily follow.
