Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is standing firm. He’s pushing back against President Trump and Border Czar Tom Homan on immigration. Frey says his city will stay a “safe haven” for illegal immigrants.
At a town hall with other Democrats, including Rep. Ilhan Omar, Frey made it clear. “I want all of you just to know exactly where we are as far as our neighbors go, Minneapolis will continue to be a safe haven for undocumented immigrants.”
“Regardless of who you are or where you come from, Minneapolis is a place where you should be proud to call home,” he added.
Frey, a Democrat, has long refused to cooperate with Trump’s immigration efforts. He’s part of a wave of blue city leaders taking a similar stand.
He’s pointed to Minneapolis’ “separation ordinance.” That means police won’t ask about immigration status or arrest people just for being undocumented.
“I want to speak to the undocumented. We love you; we care about you and the city of Minneapolis, we will stand up for you and we will do anything in our power to help,” Frey said.
Not everyone agrees. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer slammed Frey’s comments. He told Fox News Digital that Frey should focus on protecting the city—not illegal immigrants.
“If anyone deserves a ‘safe haven,’ it’s the people of Minneapolis who’ve been forced to deal with the consequences of his failed leadership,” Emmer said.
Back in February, Emmer and other Minnesota Republicans sent Frey a letter. They called his policies dangerous.
They mentioned a known al-Shabaab terrorist caught in Minneapolis in 2023. ICE also arrested three child sex predators in nearby St. Paul last month.
“Interfering with federal actions designed to ensure the security of your constituents is misguided,” the letter read.
The lawmakers urged Frey to change course. “It is time for you to put the safety of your constituents first.”
