Democratic Texas Rep. Al Green announced Tuesday morning that he will bring articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. He pointed to Trump’s shocking statement Monday night, saying the U.S. would take over the Gaza Strip to end the Israel-Hamas war.
Green’s move comes less than three weeks into Trump’s presidency. He accused Trump of backing ethnic cleansing in Gaza during a speech on the House floor.
“Ethnic cleansing has been a crime against humanity,” Green declared. “I stand here today … to denounce what the President said, to denounce the complicity of the Prime Minister of Israel.” He called the situation an injustice and announced the impeachment movement had begun.
He said the impeachment articles would be “for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.”
“The impeachment movement is going to be a grass-up movement, not a top-down,” Green added. “The people have to demand it, and when the people demand it, it will be done.”
Green has tried this before. He introduced articles of impeachment against Trump three times in his first administration. None succeeded.
“I did it before. I laid the foundation for impeachment, and it was done,” he said. “Nobody knows more about it than I, and I know that it’s time for us to lay the foundation again.”
Trump is no stranger to impeachment. House Democrats impeached him twice during his first term.
