Dem Rep Comes Unglued on CNN After Simple Question From Scott Jennings

Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas went on a fiery rant Wednesday night. It started when Republican strategist Scott Jennings asked a CNN panel if people care about fire department diversity when their homes are burning.

Jennings referenced the Los Angeles Fire Department’s (LAFD) “racial equity plan.” The plan was pushed by Chief Kristin Crowley, the agency’s first female and LGBTQ fire chief. Jennings highlighted DEI efforts after Republican Rep. Dusty Johnson questioned Los Angeles budget cuts.

“In California, there was a story about too many white men being firefighters,” Jennings said. “If your house is burning, do you care what color the firefighters are?”

Crowley has said promoting diversity is a priority. In one segment, she even stated, “There’s never enough diversity.” The LAFD showcased a DEI event in October 2024.

Crockett responded passionately. “Listen, I’m so tired,” she said. “The most educated demographic in this country right now is black women. This isn’t about race—it’s about qualifications. DEI is about opening opportunities for everyone, not just white men.”

She continued, tying history into her argument. “The White House wasn’t built by you all. It was built by my ancestors. If we were good enough to build this country, we’re good enough to serve in it.”

Crockett also pointed out the hypocrisy. “The fact is, stop acting like only white men are capable. You’re sitting here with three very capable black women.”

Meanwhile, Los Angeles firefighters battled raging wildfires. The LAFD had to call in off-duty staff due to personnel shortages. Budget cuts last year slashed nearly $20 million, mostly from operational supplies.

Jennings pushed back. “I’m just saying, in California, the focus has been DEI programs and budget cuts,” he said after Crockett’s remarks.
