Biden Signs Bill Naming Official Bird of the United States

The bald eagle, a symbol of U.S. strength for over 240 years, received an overdue recognition on Tuesday. It was officially named the national bird of the United States.

President Joe Biden signed a bill into law that amends the U.S. Code. The change designates the bald eagle as the nation’s official bird. It’s known for its white head, yellow beak, and brown body.

The eagle has been on the Great Seal of the United States since 1782. The seal includes the eagle, an olive branch, arrows, a shield, the motto “E Pluribus Unum,” and stars.

At the 2024 Tribal Nations Summit, Vice President Kamala Harris had the seal placed at the podium. It was a notable moment at the December event in Washington, D.C.

In 1782, Congress made the bald eagle the national emblem. Its image can be seen in various places, like official documents, military insignia, and U.S. currency.

But despite its widespread use, the bald eagle was never officially called the national bird — until now.

The eagle is native to North America. This new designation finally gives it the recognition many people assumed it already had.

It’s a fitting tribute to the bald eagle, symbolizing power and freedom across the country.
