Amazon is ending a perk that allowed Prime members to share their benefits with friends outside their household.
The company confirmed that its “Prime Invitee” program will be eliminated starting Oct. 1. The program gave members the option to extend free shipping perks to someone who didn’t live with them.
Instead, Amazon is pointing customers toward Amazon Family. That feature allows one other adult in the same household to share Prime benefits. Families can also link up to four teenagers, as long as their accounts were added before April 7, 2025.
In addition, Amazon Family allows up to four child profiles, giving parents the ability to manage accounts and monitor purchases.
The change means households will still be able to pool Prime benefits, but sharing with people outside the home will no longer be allowed.
For many, this could be a big adjustment, especially for those who used the Invitee program to split costs with friends.
Prime currently costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year. The program includes free shipping, Prime Video, and other perks that Amazon says are designed to make the subscription more valuable.
With this shift, Amazon is clearly tightening how benefits are shared, focusing more on families under one roof rather than friends or roommates in different places.
