California Rep. Nancy Pelosi didn’t hide her irritation when CNN’s Jake Tapper brought up former President Donald Trump’s latest remarks about her alleged insider trading.
Pelosi was on The Lead to talk about the 60th anniversary of Medicaid. But Tapper shifted gears to mention Trump’s call for an investigation into her finances — and things got tense.
As Tapper tried to play a clip of Trump’s remarks, a technical glitch forced him to read them aloud. “Nancy Pelosi became rich — ” he began, before Pelosi cut him off.
“Why do you have to read that?” she snapped. “We’re here to talk about Medicaid. That’s what I agreed to come to talk about and what that means in the election.”
Trump had told reporters, including a Daily Caller correspondent, that Pelosi “got rich” off “inside information” and endorsed a ban on stock trading for government officials.
Tapper said he just wanted to give Pelosi a chance to respond. She called the accusation “ridiculous” and said she supports banning congressional trading — not because she believes anyone’s guilty, but because it builds trust with the public.
“I’m not into it,” she said. “My husband is. But it isn’t anything to do with anything insider.”
Pelosi then accused Trump of projecting. “He’s always projecting,” she said. “Let’s not give him any more time. I’m very proud of my family. While he makes fun of us, someone inspired by him violently attacked my husband.”
Despite the drama, Pelosi endorsed the HONEST Act, which bans stock trading by top government officials. Trump, meanwhile, also took aim at Sen. Josh Hawley for blocking a GOP effort to investigate Pelosi’s trading history.
