NewsNation host Chris Cuomo took aim at Democrats Tuesday for their impeachment efforts and legal cases against Donald Trump.
During Trump’s presidency, Democrats led two impeachments. After his term, they pursued two legal cases in New York. On “The Chris Cuomo Project,” Cuomo called the first impeachment “a political indulgence” and dismissed the New York cases as “crap” aimed at hurting Trump’s 2024 campaign.
“I believe that what the Democrats did to Donald Trump — which I covered because it was the job — to impeach a guy when you know you have no chance of getting him removed — okay, zero chance — that was a political indulgence,” Cuomo said. “And you were creating an impression of a standard that you never had any intention of holding up yourself.”
Trump was acquitted in both impeachments in 2020 and 2021. Still, he faced heavy penalties later, including paying over $400 million in a civil fraud case brought by New York’s Democratic Attorney General Letitia James. In May, he was criminally convicted in a case led by Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Cuomo didn’t hold back. “Those New York cases, Charlie, were crap, and they only brought them to try to slow down Trump. We both know it,” he said. “And what they did with [Vice President] Kamala Harris is proof that they don’t give a shit about any higher standard.”
Harris, despite little primary voter approval, secured enough delegate support to become the presumptive Democratic nominee in July. Cuomo pointed to this as evidence of Democrats bypassing their own process.
Criticism of Harris’s rise wasn’t limited to Cuomo. Left-wing voters and former President Bill Clinton adviser Doug Schoen also voiced disapproval of the process at the time.
For Cuomo, these actions paint a clear picture. “They didn’t even allow for Democratic process in their own stupid little club where they can do whatever they want,” he said bluntly.
