An 18-story government building in California, once labeled “one of the ugliest structures” in San Francisco by President-elect Trump, is set for a major dedication. Next week, the building will be formally named the “Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building.”
The San Francisco Federal Building, a 234-foot-tall structure in the South of Market neighborhood, was renamed last year. Pelosi will attend Monday’s ceremony to unveil new signage, according to Bay City News. The renaming was part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023, a $1.7 trillion spending bill.
Built in 2007, the $144 million building is considered a “green” structure. It boasts stainless steel V-shaped panels and a broad concrete frame. Designed to consume one-third the energy of a typical office building, it uses natural light to illuminate 80% of its interior.
This was the first U.S. federal building to receive LEED certification, a globally recognized sustainability rating. The certification highlights its eco-friendly features and energy efficiency.
The building houses offices for Pelosi, along with several federal agencies. These include the Social Security Administration, Department of Labor, and Department of Transportation, among others, per the General Services Administration (GSA).
According to the GSA, the building’s design maximizes natural airflow and daylight. These features aim to reduce energy consumption and create a healthier workspace.
Despite its energy-saving design, the building’s gray exterior has drawn criticism. Situated near the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, a Beaux-Arts architectural gem, its appearance divides public opinion.
In 2020, then-President Trump’s executive order criticized the building’s design. The order stated that while architects praised it, locals often viewed it as unsightly. The directive aimed to promote beautiful federal buildings but was revoked by President Biden in 2021.
Security concerns have also plagued the site. Last year, workers reported safety issues due to drug dealers and homeless individuals near the building. A Department of Health and Human Services memo even suggested employees work remotely for their safety.
Data shows 525 drug-related incidents occurred near the building over a 12-month span. The block’s conditions have been a growing concern for federal workers and the public.
Pelosi, elected to Congress in 1987, represents California’s 12th district. As the only woman to serve as Speaker of the House, she led the House in impeaching President Trump twice, though the Senate acquitted him both times.
In the 2024 presidential election, San Francisco saw a surprising 7-point swing toward Trump. Even in deep blue California, political dynamics continue to shift.
