NFL Responds to Trump’s Criticism, Considers Rule Change

The NFL brought in dynamic kickoffs for the 2024 season, inspired by the XFL.

But these new formations haven’t increased returns by much.

According to Front Office Sports, just 29.1% of kickoffs have been returned this season. That’s only a 7% increase from 2023.

Former President Trump shared his thoughts on the new rule during an interview with Clay Travis.

“Big time college football is as big as the NFL,” Trump said. “I don’t know what they’re doing with the kickoff return in the NFL. It looks so bad.”

He added, “They haven’t done it in college, and they shouldn’t. I think the NFL should go back. Maybe it’s a bit more dangerous, but it’s football.”

“I think they made a terrible mistake,” Trump concluded.

On Tuesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell hinted at possible changes to the rules.

He mentioned moving touchbacks up by 5 yards could help increase returns.

Goodell said, “We’ll need to make a few changes on the kickoff that will lead to more returns.” A competition committee meeting is set for next week.
