As Americans get ready for Tuesday night’s debate in Pennsylvania, a family-owned bakery in Hatboro is using cookies to show support for the presidential candidates.
These cookies are selling fast. So far, 4,228 cookies support former President Trump. Only 369 have been sold for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Kathleen Lochel, the owner of Lochel’s Bakery, spoke to CBS News about this unique tradition.
“Every sale gets marked off,” Lochel said. “Right now, Trump is significantly in the lead. Compared to 2020, the margin is astonishing.”
DiMattei, the CBS reporter, was surprised. “The margin is even greater this year?” he asked. He suggested the location might play a part in Trump’s lead but also noted strong national support.
“All over the country,” Lochel confirmed. “Montgomery County is blue, but we’ve shipped at least a third of the cookies all over the U.S.”
The reporter quickly addressed online critics. “This isn’t politically driven, right? It’s just business,” he asked.
Lochel agreed. “It’s business, and it’s creative. You have to think outside the box. We’re shipping all over the country.”
The bakery enjoys seeing customers’ reactions from across the U.S. “It’s tremendous for a small business like ours,” Lochel added.
Despite the buzz, the bakery keeps it lighthearted, reminding everyone on social media, “Keep calm… it’s a cookie.”
Fox29 noted the bakery’s past cookie polls have predicted three of the last four elections. But in 2020, Trump led in cookies, though not in votes.
